Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays a vital role in the UK economy. FDI refers to investments made by foreign entities, or individuals, in business interests within the UK.

FDI can take several forms, including starting a brand-new company in the UK, acquiring an existing company or expanding its current operations. In this newsletter, we take a closer look at the different types of FDI and their role in shaping the UK economy.

What are M&A and Non-M&A Investments?

FDI broadly fits into two categories:

  • Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A): When a foreign entity merges with or acquires a UK company. These transactions result in significant capital inflows and can reshape entire industries.
  • Non-M&A FDI: Often referred to as greenfield investments. These involve foreign entities establishing brand-new facilities or operations within the UK.

M&A FDI tends to receive more attention due to the scale of the transactions, but both M&A and Non-M&A FDI contribute substantially to economic growth.

How Much FDI Does the UK Attract?

Official statistics state that in 2022, the UK received £22.9 billion in FDI inflows. This highlights its position as a leading destination for foreign investors. Notable sectors of investment include financial services, technology, and energy markets. Sustained FDI in key industries reflects the UK’s position as a global leader in international commerce. See the earlier 3CS newsletter in this series.

Major Sources of FDI in the UK

FDI in the UK is a diverse landscape, but major contributors include:

  • The United States: This is the largest source of FDI in the UK. U.S. entities invest heavily in the UK’s financial sector, oil and gas, technology, and manufacturing.
  • The European Union: Entities from Germany, France, and the Netherlands are notable investors in various UK industries.
  • Asia-Pacific: FDI from this region is expanding, particularly in technology, construction, industrial facilities, and transportation networks.

A Closer Look at FDI From Asian Nations

FDI from Asian nations is growing, with China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan standing out as notable contributors:

  • China: Chinese entities continue to invest substantially in construction, property, energy sectors, and technology. In 2023, the total stock of FDI from China was estimated to be around £24 billion.
  • Japan: Japanese companies have a rich history of investing in the automotive and manufacturing industries. Notable companies like Nissan and Hitachi continue to expand their operations in the UK
  • South Korea: In 2019, South Korean FDI in electronics, the automotive industry, and financial services amounted to £2.1 billion in inward stock of FDI
  • Taiwan: While smaller than other regions, Taiwanese investments in the UK still contribute significantly to the economy, particularly in the green energy sector. Official statistics from 2019 put the inward stock of FDI from Taiwan at around £0.9 billion.

Why the UK is a Hub For FDI

The UK is an appealing destination for foreign investors for several key reasons:

  • Optimal geographic position: The UK’s ideal geographical placement means it serves as a gateway to European and global markets.
  • Business-friendly outlook: The UK boasts a competitive corporate tax framework, and its legal system is renowned for being fair and transparent.
  • Highly-skilled workforce: The UK is home to numerous world-class universities, making it a global leader in research and development. International investors have access to a diverse and talented workforce.

FDI and global partnerships are vital to the UK economy. Established ties with the U.S. and EU and expanding investment from the Asia-Pacific region highlight its appeal to international investors.
